An interview with Seven for the March 2007 Newsletter.Morolen: So how did you get your s/n? Seven: Really, it's just a nickname I developed among my closest friends, mainly for my love of the number (don't know why, it just happened after a while) and the fact that 7 is my birth number (started getting into numerology once I started wondering about my love for the number, lucky break, I guess). Morolen: Have you found any other interesting things via numerology? Seven: not really. not to me, I was just interested in my strange reasoning for liking the number. I looked it up in a few places online and it basically fit my personality just about to a tee. After that, I was done searching. . . all though I did find it interesting that the numbers start from 1 through 11 then skip all the way to 22. wasn't interested enough to find the reasoning, though. Morolen: Well, what are some of your other interests other then glowsticking? Seven: Well, I'm currently studying to be a graphic artist, so a bit of design (though I feel I could be better at it), I'm more of an illustrator at heart, I LOVE doing photography, weight lifting (even though I haven't done it consistently in years); I love music and I'm interested in learning how to make my own, whether through producing or just learning instruments (currently learning the guitar) and video games keep me going at times... Morolen: what are subjects interest you as an artist, ones that you particularly enjoy drawing or shooting? and from one artist to another, so i understand how personal this can be, my i ask what or whom is your muse? Seven: hmm... I like out the box stuff, but not crazy. there's a fine line bet. the two that I think a lot of people tend to cross or not cross enough (or, at least what I see in my school); like, in the case of photography, specifically, I dig crazy angled shots, mostly portraits, or just strong emphatically lit portraits (esp. in B&W) that just tell a story within itself, whether it be in the overall composition or just the expression of the subject (face wise or even body wise); I like off centre compositions as well, symmetry gets boring after a while unless done right. . . I dont know what that means exactly, but you can tell when something just feels "right" in a piece. Seven: as for inspiration. . . Seven: in my beginning stages, I didn't really have much, I was just flowing (just shooting whatever for photo class) but soon I started realizing how much I loved portraits, and what story could be told by just a facial expression alone or the content of the portrait as a whole (location, lighting, etc.)... Seven: Now, I've recently learned about photographers such as Irving Penn, and Cartier Bresson, and I'm gaining an interest in more of their work. Seven: today, I actually ran into some work by Mark Seliger (not sure if the last name is correct) that was really interesting. Seven: When it comes to predecessors, I never really look to many, I just do what I do. Seven: either, that, or I may not know their name at the time, lol. Morolen: Well if i ever come to the EC i hope we can go shooting sometime Seven: definitely man. Morolen: Whats your equipment as of right now? Seven: right now, I just have my NIKON D50 and whatever knowledge given to me by my photo teachers, lol. Seven: and of course, good ol' photoshop. Seven: I hope to get some lighting equipment asap. really interested in getting some intense shots. Seven: oh yeah, and I'm gonna actually need models, too. lol Morolen: off the record, i would reccomend modelmayhem.com TONS of models doing TFP/TFCD in ny Seven: coolness. thanks. Morolen: and a killer forum Seven: Nice. yeah I want to continue building my portfolio as much as possible. Seven: I mean, right now with school and all, its hard to get some really good stuff (time and what not) but once I graduate it hsould be all good. Morolen: So what are your aspirations for the future? Seven: hmm . . . moving out of my neighborhood (but possibly staying in NY, but maybe later on, moving to Belize, esp. if America continues to go on the route it's going), perhaps owning or co-owning a design studio/firm of some sort, getting married, having a couple kids. . . that's basically the overall scope of things for the time being. Morolen: Thats pretty Far reaching, Any particular reasons for Belize? Seven: I'm half Belizean. . . and I heard it's a beautiful place. Seven: Might as well explore a part of my roots. Seven: I'm American born..and I've pretty much had my fill of that part. Morolen: Fair enough, hows your spanish? ;) Seven: *thumbs down* Seven: lol Seven: and I took 7 years of it! Seven: and I can't form a sentence to save my life. Seven: I can read it though. Seven: but don't ask me to say "where is the nearest gas station" in 3 seconds. Seven: there's African parts though, from what I hear. Seven: I think I may be that, lol. but i'm not sure. Seven: for a long time I thought I was spanish, so imagine how bad I felt not knowing it, LOL. Morolen: :-D Seven: lol Morolen: So did you attend the much famed EC ultra circle? and if so how was it from first person Seven: yuppers. Seven: I must say, amazing. Seven: unlike any feeling. Seven: like I usually feel kinda crappy at clubs, and nervous, but once I jumped in the circle, all that when away. Seven: I'm in the UC video! all 5 seconds of my part, LOL. Seven: but yeah, I just feel so much closer to the culture, it was a great feeling. Seven: great vibe. Morolen: So are you going to come to EDC? I know alot of ECers are trying to come this year. Seven: yeah, I saw the list. Seven: wtf, lol Seven: we're invading! Seven: lol Seven: I want to, most definitely. Seven: but we'll see. Seven: I'm at the "no" point, money wise. Seven: but it's a few months away, anything can happen. Seven: but as of now, unfortunately, I'm a no. :-( Seven: I want to! Morolen: Now on to the obligatory glowsticking questions Seven: aah yes, lol.... Morolen: You're a stringer i hear? Why that camp? Seven: That's what I was introduced to first. Seven: I actually never heard of glowsticking before I was introduced to it. Seven: so it was a very foreign concept to me. Seven: I had never been to a rave before that time, never really had too much of an interest, I wasn't even that interested in sticking when Aden came to me about it. Seven: but the more he came by my house and showed me stuff, showed me more videos, told me about GS.c, the more interested i became. Seven: esp. when I started getting more involved on the forums and watching videos. Morolen: What part of GSC do you like the most? Seven: as in? Seven: like specific parts, or like an overall sense? lol Morolen: touche'', poor question Seven: like what aspects of the site? Morolen: yea Seven: ok. Seven: umm, I like the mission statement, what's more or less trying to be done by the GSC community. Seven: I can understand why it's being done and I support the reasoning. Seven: to strip this art of all negative connotations and promote the creativity and artistic quality involved in it is a beautiful thing to me. Seven: I also love that there's different people from all walks of life, of all colors shapes and sizes that frequent the forums and come together, even if half of us never met or may never get the chance to actually physically meet everyone.
