I would like to welcome you to Glowsticking.com. First of all, if you haven't already gone to the Newbie Section then I suggest that you go there first. This is a site that has a strong community aspect to it. You learn faster and have more fun if you get involved with the site. However, we expect certain things from our members here.

This site is not only about learning how to glowstick! We are a group with strong cultural beliefs. It is your own responsibility to learn about the beliefs of the sites that you are a part of. If you do not know about our beliefs, then please read our Articles (more specifically, the Glowsticking Culture Articles) and visit the Culture Section. Some people do not share our beliefs. If you are one of these people then we ask that you please not use our resources.

Have fun learning!

Some advice on learning the basics.

Most beginners have this idea that there is a set order of how to learn moves. This belief isn't necessarily true; there is no set order in which moves have to be learned. Moves such as the figure-8 and tracing will help you out as a beginner. But you do not have to know how to trace in order to do a hand stall. You do not have to know how to do a figure-8 in order to learn the helicopter. However, there are some moves such as tracing that will make it easier for you to learn other freehand moves.

From my experience, what works best is to watch a video and pick out a few ideas that you like. After you have picked out these ideas you can then try and learn how to do the moves yourself. This doesn't mean to copy exactly. Learning somebody else's combo doesn't really make you that much better of a freehander. It doesn't get you any closer to being able to construct your own combos.

What does help is taking the ideas that you like from these combos and then creating your own combo from that idea. In this sense, there is no exact order of learning moves. There is only an order in which you decide to learn things. Just practice and find out what looks good to you. This leads one to form a style of their own, which is the topic of the next section in this tutorial center.
