I got to thinkin', it seems that a common way of explaining figure-8s to stringers or corkscrews to freehanders is to say that a figure-8 is like doing a corkscrew without strings, or that a corkscrew is a figure-8 with strings.
Minimal experimentation demonstrates that doing extensions without strings doesn't look too bad, either.

So, what other stringing moves can make a good basis for something freehand? Either in terms of just doing the same hand motions, or trying to copy the light-trail pattern. I'm thinking, with a little elbow flexibility, you oughta be able to do flowers. I tried weaves for a bit, but they didn't look too great; my wrists get sloppy without the strings pulling back on them. That's probably just a matter of practice, though.

Way cool.
Not quite the motion I had in mind, though. I'm gonna try working on doing the base circle with my shoulders and then the flower petals by rotating my elbow.

yeah, its pretty much just taking a poi move and extending your arms to make the glowstick follow the same pattern (your arm becomes the string)

its kinda limited, all ive seen really is a weave (you have to REALLY exaggerate the arm motions for it to work), butterfly, windmill, and low windmill, but now that you mention it, it looks pretty cool to replicate a spiral (make your arms wind in to a helicopter, pause, then "wrap" out the other way)

i cant really think of too many other ones though, hopefully there will be some good ideas in this thread (IMG:http://www.glowsticking.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) good idea

i remember there's a demo in the gsc dvd about a 3 beat weave motion on freehanding it's way cool =3 ... the helicopter reminds me of a windmill motion if you put it over and behind your head and extensions are another addition to that..

I love this stuff (IMG:http://www.glowsticking.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/happy.gif) .

5 beat hand motions look awkwardly, not that bad if you do it right =).

String Butterfly hand motions are made of win.

Consider me a freehanding purist.

Freehand belongs in stringing, stringing doesnt belong in freehand.

Freehanders! you are members of a dying breed!
You must take heed! and gather to this unsung creed..
Fulfill your freehanding duty, bring GS.C more of what it needs.
Pick up the sticks, put down the strings.
(stringers are cool, but the 234972314 to 1 ratio of freehanders is WHACK)

ive been toying around with doing a helicoptor movement, but bringing it around in a circle so it kinda resembles a buzzsaw flower from stringing.
its kinda cool.

String Butterfly hand motions are made of win.
Tried 3 beat hand motions, discovered that it's hard to get the effect of a complete circle, although you can fiddle with that to get a side-ways figure-8. Tried 5 beat to get better circles, haven't been very happy with the pause while switching sides. I suppose that's just a matter of practice to get it up to speed.

For the butterfly, do you refer to Thread The Needle hand motions? It seems to me just regular butterfly would be kinda boring- just bobbing up and down a bit.
I do like the TTN motions, though. Re-invented it on accident and then realized "hey, this feels really familiar... oh yeah, this is a stringing move."

Think I'm gonna have to try out that helicopter-windmill.

I meant butterfly as in using your hands to mimic what a butterfly would look like if you were using strings. Just imagine someones stringing a butterfly. Now replace the strings with your arms.

Essentially your replicating the light trails.
