We've talked about the Plateau problem a few times here, and I've got an idea to combat it. (Not that I *need* to combat it right now, but hey, who knows, maybe at some point I will.)

Pick a move/combo/style/whatever that you think is way beyond your current skill level. Then, whenever you feel like you're running out of steam, you can work on that. Maybe you'll even master it, but if you don't, that ought to provide plenty of material and inspiration for getting over the plateau.

Short version: hey, post a bunch of really hard stuff for inspirational purposes, why don'tcha?

My current long term goals- 4-string stuff / double glowmeteor & BTB buzzsaw weaves (i.e., inserting a buzzsaw into a weave every time you switch sides).

btb butterfly weaves, btb butterfly crossers, and a bunch of straight jackets like straight jacket combos and stuff.

The problem with thinking about long-term goals is twofold: 1 - either you fail to reach your goal, in which case, it'd be tragic or 2 - you reach your goal and you are left with nothing else to learn, which is also tragic. Hmm...

And we should generally work on flow, style, combos, as opposed to individual moves. A behind-the-back move or even a set of those don't really make a difference if they don't go with the rest of your stringing.

You can't fail unless you give up or die first. That's why it's "Long Term". And if you reach your goal and have nothing left to learn... well, then, it didn't really do the job it was supposed to. The point is get more inspired as you go along.

Totally agree. So don't restrict goals to learning particular moves. I picked one particular move as a goal because I expect to build up a lot of other skills on the way to mastering it. But I also selected complete and different styles of performance (double glowmeteor, whoo!) as another goal, no individual moves mentioned. And another goal might be to just improve your flow as much as possible, although that's a bit vague.

Well I think when a plateau is hit it's not exactly from not being able to do so and so move, but more a lack of creativity.

It's exactly the opposite of not being able to do a particular move. If there's a move that you want to do and can't yet, you probably haven't plateaued- you've still got that move to work on.

And as long as you've got something to work for, that should help pull you through a period of decreased creativity. Ideally, it serves as a spark for additional creativity.

I think this is a good topic:

Long term goals are to add grace into stringing, let the body shine as much as the sticks.

Trying to be progressive and learn theory behind moves as well.

Crosser combos are one thing I adore but can never really tackle.
