I've been looking around at the different videos and tutorials on youtube and i found that every person has a different way of holding their string. some make the string a loop and put one finger in the loop, others have a single string and wrap their hands around it, some do this funky way that i have no idea how. anyway: How do you hold your string and what do you think is the most practical way, if there is one.

honestly dude, ive had such a hard time trying different lengths, different types of laces, different everything, and what ive found works best for me universally for stringing, one handed spinning, and free hand transitions is 36inch flat laces. just hang the string on your middle finger, and pinch between thumb and index. try and see. but its all personal preference (IMG: http://www.glowsticking.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I use 45in flat laces.
First, I let the stick hang, and put the string around my pointer, middle, and ringfinger. (palm up) Then I pull the string up between my middle and ring finger, and pinch it between my thumb and pointer.

I switch between using my index & my middle finger, depending, though I probably shouldn't. Middle provides better rotation at times but index is more comfortable for some kinds of control. Experiment a LOT.

Just pick up a bunch of different laces at the nearest store you can find them and try each of them out. At <$1 a pair, it's not all that expensive even if you end up trying a lot of them.

I use loops, from my poi-era. Double loops for my middle and ring finger, and when im doing transfers i hold the cords between my thumb and index finger with the loopy part in my palm. I like using loops for doing transfers as it gives you a bit thicker part to grab onto.
