I wanted to learn how to dance mainly hip-hop but other styles too. Any idea on how to start. I currently know how to glowstick and some freehand any way to interpret that into my dancing?
just my opinion but if i wanted to learn to do hiphop, i would first follow music videos of it. It would probably help to try and follow so you can get basics ^^"
a good way to start is to learn any of a thousands of shuffle/hardstep/two-step/housing/jacking type dances. then learn all the rest. this will work out your leg muscles and give you strength and endurance. and how to do it to the beat.
you will often find your arms and hands not doing much and you want to do something interesting with your arms and hands. you will soon be bothered by this. you will then start to notice that sometimes you don't want to step to the beat and you want the rest of your body to move with it in a different way. your core body is not moving much and you want to do something about it. this is when you move onto.
you then learn popping fundamentals, like waving and gliding and tutting. i recommend waving for your body, gliding, floats for your feet and such because they can connect so easily to tutting and other styles very easily and are basis for a lot of things.
it is then when you get decent you add your glowsticking to it.

Also try a few styles where your lines are longer for example ballroom where you get to stretch and it involves you not only moving your feet and your torso and pushes your limits in terms of restricted, rigid movement and how you can make classic moves look good.
When you take ballroom, something as simple as a side step can look differently depending on how you do it.
If you are wanting to learn new styles then my suggestion would be to go to you local college and ask arround. This may sound stupid but any college that has a dance hall or dance classes will always have the breakers practicing in there at least one night of the week. I live near ODU and every tuesday night the breakers meet in the dance room for practice. NSU is thureaday night. Hip Hoppers do thier thing. So just go looking and exploring arround. You are bound to find a group out there.

I agree. i live in Arlington TX and every saturday a couple of rival crews go to dance at UT at arlington. just go to a local university and see if any one battles. you can learn a lot from just watching... i know i did.
youtube is your friend ^^ ... just watch videos of dance studios practicing their routines... i take hip hop classes and i try to incorporate some of the choreo i learned into my freehanding....it's all about going with the flow ^^
