Lol, no way!!!!! u guys like Maynard Ferguson?!?!?!? Ive actually seen him live twice in the denver metro area, both times in high school, and i got his autograph once too!!!! Lol, he practically needs an O2 tank to haul around with him when hes up here at a mile high playin those freakishly high notes!
We played many of his songs in my high school jazz band, but i could never play as high or as fat of sounding note as he could (who can!??? lol). Birdland was an all time favorite of mine for a few years, Chameleon was another freakish but amazing one, his version of Macarthur park is like the best jazz "ballad" ever, and my senior year we discovered this simple arrangement of Cocunut Champange that we always warmed up at concerts with, that was fun. His arrangement of Over the Rainbow had influence that got me in trouble one time; in jazz band, we were supposed to be taking turns ad-libbing and i just played the over the rainbow theme in a b-flat blues progression, lol, apparently i was cheating. And o man, its been too long since ive thought about this, his song Fireshaker gives me goosebumps literally everytime i hear it; we played a similar arrangement of that one as well but the main trumpet solo of his was a tremendous feat for me to accomplish (i usually would end up cracking the higher notes and getting super embarassed, but on some rare occasions, i was able to make it sound good and boy do i miss that feeling of accomplishment).
Phil Driscoll was another amazing and inspirational trumpet player to me. But nothing compares to what Maynard's music did for me and our jazz band back in high school, lol. Man, i rly need to get back to playing; thinking about all of this is really making me miss it. Thanks for posting this, Soup!!!!!!
trumpet players FTW haha
