My mom worked at GM for many years and she has a pension with them. I'm wondering if any of you know what will happen to that if GM files Chapter 11. Here is a link to an article, but I understand nothing about politics and things like pension and stock. GM possibly filing Chapter 11What are your thoughts about all this?

It NEEDS to fucking die. Holy cow, politicians need to finally understand that you can't "stimulate" an economy into just coming back up when it's not yet finished dying. If you're shot in the heart, circulating blood isn't gonna do anything, cuz you're still gonna die anyway.
Austrian economics FTW. Leave the market alone.
I don't wanna hear any bullcrap about all these other industries that are gonna be hurt by it... this will all happen now, for a short time, or later for much longer. I think now sounds way better.

Yeah but my question is what happens to people like my mom who worked for the company for 20 years? What happens to her pension? Does she lose it b/c these greedy money hungry higher ups? She already might lose the house that she loves b/c she's a realtor (and we all know how that is going right now), and she can't find a temporary job right now to make ends meet. Why is it that the rich keep getting richer and the middle to lower class keep losing everything that they have worked their whole life for?

I get so scared when I think about this issue. Luckily, neither of my parents work for GM, but my father has worked for Ford for 16 years, and is currently layed off. FOr the past year, he's been in/out of work, and I fear that if anything worse happens to the automobile industry, my dad will lose his job. I do, however, feel as though filing bankruptcy/issuing bailouts is an uphill battle though. They should just let it be for a while, too much is going on at once. I hope everything is okay for you and your family, just try to stay positive.

Sorry bebe, I totally only read "what are your thoughts on this?" and not the first part, my bad! haha.
Because the government is doing a restructuring of GM and pumping even more money into it (which I must admit I'm against), I THINK she MIGHT keep her pension. I'm not positive on that one tho.

The government handing out money to all these huge, faceless corporations is one of the WORST possible ways to "save" the economy right now.
I know this sounds pretty cold, considering the OP has family directly involved, but fuck GM, Chrysler, Ford, or any other company that cant keep their ink black. If they fall, it was their own fault, not the consumer, not the government, their own.
That said, I really cant seem to grasp why we are trying to save these companies. Maybe them going under and letting smaller companies start to pop up in their place, possibly with new, truly innovative ideas, is what we really need right now. Not the same company with the same ideas and marketing tactics.

This right here says that they are currently filing Chapter 11. The government is getting a majority of the ownership of the company, and will be feeding them money for them to stay up. Expected job cuts of 21000 employees in 2600 locations. I dont like the idea of the government owning a large auto company. That just doesnt seem right. So many things can be pushed and pulled to make some ridiculous law about people buying GM vehicles to support the government, while others manufacturers can be heavily taxed, restricted, or even banned. And I wouldnt put it past some of the fools in Congress to do that..

Everyone is having problems in the auto industry, even Toyota, which is like the most efficient company. I think Ford will be fine of the 3 auto makers in the USA. Ford and Toyota will weather the storm.

She is not going to lose her currently contributed to pension. even in Chapter 11 pensions would be the last thing sacrificed and GM has lots of assets. Moving forward her benefits will most likely take a dive, but this will take time.
