Explanation of Airwraps

-------------------------------------------------

Antispin - Anti spin is typically when the arm is rotating one way (clockwise) and the sticks are rotating the other way (counterclockwise).

-------------------------------------------------

Atomics - Type of spin where the strings planes are perpendicular to each other.

-------------------------------------------------

Beats - Amount of rotations in certain moves.

-------------------------------------------------

Bowtie - A set of moves where the glowstick(s) is(are) tied to the string. There are many variations.

-------------------------------------------------

BTB (behind the back) - A set of moves that are done by swinging the sticks different ways behind your back.
BTB Tutorials

-------------------------------------------------

Butterfly - The sticks swinging in opposite directions (one clockwise and one counterclockwise) with hands held next to or close to each other. There are many variations of the butterfly.

-------------------------------------------------

Buzzsaw - When your hands are spinning the glowsticks in between the arms. Looks a bit like a buzzsaw, but not from your angle, from the side.

-------------------------------------------------

Catching - Catching the glowstick while it's in mid-swing.

Other Places To Catch The Glowsticks

-------------------------------------------------

Ceiling/floor Plane - Glowsticks are moving in a plane parallel to the ceiling and floor. The corkscrew is a move done in the ceiling plane.

-------------------------------------------------

Color switching - A handles move where the two glowsticks on each string are different colors and swapped. There are many different variations.
Colorswitching Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Combo - A sequence of wraps/traces/catches/etc in which the little moves mesh together into an instantly recognizable pattern. Combos are the basis of a stringers creativity and uniqueness.
Combo Construction Part 1
Combo Construction Part 2

-------------------------------------------------

Corkscrew - A move where the stringing follow each other in the celling plane passing over the top part of your head/arms (Head if you're bent over.) and than underneath> Your hands would make the same motion as the Freehand figure 8.
Corkscrew Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Crosser - Type of weave commonly done in wall plane. Done by crossing your arms over to the other side of you body and do a one or two beat swing per glowstick on each side. Several types including huggy (with both arms in front so it looks as though your hugging yourself) left arm in front/right arm behind you, right arm front/left behind, btb crosser, and variations including straight jackets.
Crossers Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Crossover wrap - A wrap sequence where your arms cross over each other to wrap on the same arm. There are many different variations of this move.
Crossover Wraps Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Duowrapping - Wrapping where you wrap one part of your body, and while it is still wrapped, you wrap onto another part of your body.
Duowrapping Example Video
Duowrapping Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Flowers - Flowers are nothing more but a long arm poi extension changing the point of rotation at certain time intervals during the course of spinning the glowstick. What this means in english- moving your arms in circles while the glowstick is rotating around.
Flowers Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Fountain - Truly a forward weave in the wallplane on one side, then a reverse wallplane weave on your other side. Some people have adapted the original definition to, "Forward weave on one side, to a windmill, to a reverse weave on the other side." This adapted version of the fountain includes a windmill.
Fountain Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Forward - If you were spinning like a regular jump rope you are said to be spinning forward. From behind your head, to in front of your head, to your knees to your feet and jumping, and back behind you again.

-------------------------------------------------

Freehand Transition - Category of moves that involve switching from stringing type moves to freehand type moves. Typically done by either winding in, or catching the glowstick.
How Stinkowicz Ties His Strings (Freehand Transition Included)

-------------------------------------------------

Gumbies - When you pull the strings across the body and around limbs in contortions much like Gumby the cartoon character.
Gumbie Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Handles - Type of string setup where there are glowsticks at both ends of the string.
Handles Example Video
How to Tie Handles

-------------------------------------------------

Hand/wrist wraps - Much like a one handed spiral with one glowstick, wraps done on the same hand/wrist. May also be known as shotguns.

-------------------------------------------------

Inversions - Inversions are upside down as well as reversed, in a contrary direction. Need to have strings shorter than your arms. Easy one can be done by not carrying over the weave to the other side but bending over and letting it go under your arms.
Home of poi Inversion Tutorial Thread

-------------------------------------------------

Isolations - When the center of rotation has been moved from your hands/wrist to a spot on the strings, you are isolating. Isolations is a concept built on clubswinging “snakes”, where the center of spin became the spinner’s elbow and the clubs melded into the forearms. Poi isolations often meld into each other (in glowstringing, the strings seem to become one) but they don’t need to.
Isolation Example Video

-------------------------------------------------

Linkcatch - Catch done where the strings cross forming a "Link" much like an X with an intersection in the middle. The right hand is holding the glowstickattached to the right hand and the left hand is holding the glowstick attached to the left hand.
Link Catching Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Linkcatch Orbital - Orbital created by first linking the strings together, then throwing the sticks into the circular motion.
Link Catch Orbital
Link Catch and Orbital Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Extensions - Category of moves done with arms extended

-------------------------------------------------

One Handed Moves - A fairly new category in glowstringing of moves that involve holding both strings with one hand.
One Handed Butterfly and Wraps Tutorial
One Handed Spiral and Wraps Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Orbital Airwrap - An airwrap in which the sticks tangle then spin in a small circle. The orbital requires a 90 degree turn as the sticks begin to spin, which seperates it from an ordinary airwrap.
Orbital Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Planes - The 3 spacial dimensions that you can spin cleanly in. X, Y, Z. They are know as the ceiling/floor, side, and wall planes.

-------------------------------------------------

360s - Any move done with a full 360 rotation.

-------------------------------------------------

Reverse - Type of spin opposite of forward. If you were spinning a jump rope it would be hitting the back of your feet. Tagged onto moves which require direction, such as weaves.

-------------------------------------------------

Spiral - Type of wrap where the hands are clapped or stacked together and the glowsticks wrap around them at the same speed, thus creating a spiral. Clap hands together if rotating clockwise, and right hand on top, palm down if rotating counterclockwise.
Spiral Tutorial
Spiral Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Stalls - A halt in the swing of the glowstick, often accompanied by a change in direction, or grabbing the glowstick to transfer to freehand.

-------------------------------------------------

Straight jacket - A position the arms form by threading through each other. Many moves can be done within a straight jacket.
What The Straight Jacket Position Looks Like

-------------------------------------------------

String Manipulations - The proper term for moves that involve manipulating the stick and strings, usually involving caches, throws, tosses, links, thumbplits and a variety of other moves. Also called "string tricks". An incorrect term that has been used is "mind games" which should only apply to freehand moves.

-------------------------------------------------

String Wrap - String wrap is a type of wrap that involves pinching one of the glowsticks while wrapping the other glowstick around the taut string.
String Wrap Tutorial

-------------------------------------------------

Thread The Needle/TTN - Variation of butterfly where the hands alternate move away and towards the body threading around each other, hence the name "Thread the needle"

-------------------------------------------------

Through Wraps - Type of long string wrap that is partially wrapped on a limp and then carried over to the other side. Typical on leg, bicep, arm, and neck. Seen in many martial arts movies/videos where the object on the end of the poi is deadly. Rope dart, Meteors, and most famously by Gogo in Kill Bill vol 1.

-------------------------------------------------

Throws/tosses/releases - Any move where the glowsticks are completely let go off and fly into the air. Hopefully accompanied by a catch. Typically used with handles.

-------------------------------------------------

Thumbsplitting - Put your thumbs underneath the strings and then let go of the sticks so they go to the opposite hand.
Basic Thumbsplitting With Link Catch Orbital

-------------------------------------------------

Traces - A trace usually begins with a wrap and then your hand moves around the body part you are tracing to make the stick follow a circle (trace) around that body part. Different places to trace are on your knee and neck primarily and also on your feet and elbows.
Trace Tutorial
Trace Example Video

-------------------------------------------------

Turns - Type of family move that involves turning. Turning 180 degrees will require you to learn the forward and reverse versions of that move, like simple spinning, weaves, and flowers.

-------------------------------------------------

UTL (Under The Leg) - A set of moves that are done by swinging the sticks different ways under or between you legs.

-------------------------------------------------

Wallplane - The plane that the glowsticks swing in, in front of you. If you are standing so you are facing a wall, that is the same plane as wallplane.

-------------------------------------------------

Weave - Swinging your strings on the planes on the right and left side of your body. And constantly alternating from the two planes. There are MANY different variations of this basic concept.
Intro To Glowstringing

-------------------------------------------------

Weave/side plane - Plane parallel to the side of your body in which the weave is done.

-------------------------------------------------

Windmill - A weave done in the wallplane - a weave in front of and in back of your head spinning 90 degrees to the body.
Intro To Glowstringing

-------------------------------------------------

Wraps - A category of moves that involve wrapping the stick around a certain body part (for example your arm, bicep, neck, etc)
