well... people are fluent with their tosses because of a lot of practice. over time, you will gain a lot of hand eye coordination that will greatly increase your catching level. once you get to a level that you are comforatble with, you can try to faster tosses or more complicated ones.
as for your other question... you can try this tansition from leg trace to toss:
trace down your legs with both sticks and once you get to your feet, try heli tossing it high into the air and catching it. basically you body will bend down to trace your legs and feet and then straightening back up to catch the heli toss.
try that... but you dont have to listen to me. experiment and come up with neater ones =) have f un

yep, just practice at it. And make sure you keep in mind that it will be a long, long, long time before you catch all your tosses. Dont be discouraged by drops, youll eventually get the hand eye coordination down.

try to keep you hands moving during the catch -
dont just wait for the stick - keep flowing and move your hand into the path of the falling stick.

I think he was getting at flow, being fluid. When youre tossing try making it look like youre still tracing, and not just tossing a stick up and down. Remember the aim is at establishing freehand as a form of dance, so dont just stand still, move around, but be under control.

I'd just carry an old glowstick around and toss it over and over again. You just have to get down the right toss and you have to know where the stick is going to go say when you throw it and try to catch it behind your back.

most people stop at just trying to catch the stick. but you gotta go past that. try to control where you control it, and where you throw it to.

well, one of the first things i was told is when you throw it, you want to catch it perpendicular to the way it spins. i.e. if its spinning vertical catch it horizontal. and practice like everyone else said!

some ideas:
throw from behind the back
launch from behind your head
other side of your head
below your legs, in between your legs
from a funky position
from a tut position
from a thread
from a weave
from a trace
from the movement of your legs

and try to have a good idea of trace/tossing pattern you are going into before you catch the stick- this will help with the overall "flow". Once you get that down you should try and think ahead 2 or 3 moves from the current one youre doing, remember there are tons of options off of tons of options, so you literally can do the same move 5 times in 2 mins and it will look different every time
