hold it by the stub... and flick your wrist outwards while move your hand up a lill (for elevation). its more on the wrists and the flicking... the harder the flick, the more rotations. and vice versa
also... you dont always catch the stick perfectly on one end... sometimes you get it in the middleish..
for those... i hold it with a thumb and the index finger near the middle. and use my middle finger and hit the stick. let go of the stick once you hit it so it spins. its more of timing on this way.
just mess around and find your way personal ways on doing it... these are some ways i figured out while messing around with a pencil in school

theres also the pen spinning flick, if you know how to spin the pen around your thumb its the basic idea
