somtimes I feel as though I could write a book on glowsticking.


chapter 1: why are you glowsticking?

chapter 2: poi vs. glowsticking

chapter 3: wrap combos

chapter 4: traces, stalls and extensions

chapter 5: style...

...and so on.

The elements of glowsticking as I see it are essentially three things,

1.Moves that are unique to glowsticking = wrap combos

2.traditional poi

3.manipulations

I enjoy a glowsticking artist who integrates all these elements. however it doesn't mean they are entertaining to watch. 90% of good glowsticking is how you put it together because nothing is original (for the most part, our art is still growing and being innovated, especially w/ handles). Melvenorc12 I know that you rally against poi in your glowsticking but you're a special case cause you're nuts. (in a good way)

just felt like throwing that out there. being bored in class does this to me.

That would be glowstringing, not as general as the term, glowsticking.

Art should not be learned through a book, it should be learned through experience.

I'm still against calling them "traditional poi moves" or poi moves at all in glowstringing since it's like we're naming our moves after another art. It's like poi calling all of their wraps "glowsticking." Now that just makes no sense if you ask me. Weaves, butterflies, inversions, that's all glowsticking to me.

But I agree! I feel like I could write books too =D.

And I just read that you think I'm against poi in glowsticking. This is where aboslutely everybody reads my posts wrong, I don't get why lol.

The word poi to me means a totally different art using socks, fire, whatever rather than glowsticks. The moves are not totally what defines an art. There are many arts who do moves like weaves/butterflies/ect that are not called poi, so we should fit in that category too. Like i described in my last post I just feel that we shouldnt call what you think of as "poi" poi, rather we should call it something else like "aerial" moves or something like that. That's what I feel.

I see what you mean, sorry I misunderstood your stance.

I think a full length video on the rave culture and the history of stringing and sticking would be cool to watch. Maybe that's what I'll do with my life. I'll travel across the states and gather information and footage/ just have a blasty blast going to raves with the intention of gathering footage. haha, but I do agree with Malvenorc. I mean the art of Poi has been around for centuries so I think it's earned the right to be titled an art. I mean it's all about object manipulation, but I don't think stringing evolved from Poi. Stringing evolved from the rave culture and people took concepts from poi and evolved them into something completely new. Sure there's obviously similar concepts, but at no point would I group them together other than into the object manipulation category. Although Poi has evolved at the same time to be incorporated into the rave scene ie. ogg poi and other such toys. They're two seperate arts unto themselves each painting a different picture with different variables and even more obscure styles for each, and they'll continue to grow further and further apart as we move forward into the future. I met a kid named ryan at the last rave that was only sixteen! He blew my mind with his style and techniques and especially his skill level. It makes me wish I had started at a younger age. lol.
